2016 Pikes Peak Challenge Summit Hiker: Nichole Barraza

Nine Fountain Police Department officers & detectives are choosing to hike 13 miles up the trail to the beautiful summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet to raise funds for The Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado (BIAC) on September 10th. The BIAC is the go-to resource for help and services for survivors of an injury to the brain, their families and providers. Many citizens living in Fountain are current or prior military and have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to combat which we as a department and community understand all too well.

Traumatic brain injuries hits very close to home for one hiker in particular, Sergeant Sheyna Marshall has a son with a TBI due to a tragic car accident her and her family were victims of in 2006.
Sergeant Marshall’s son, Justin, 4 at the time, was seriously injured in the crash and has never fully recovered due to his TBI. Enduring countless seizures, extensive surgeries, physical therapy and every day struggles, Justin has remained positive and courageous through it all and has inspired many people. Justin has encouraged our hikers and has shown them that anything is possible which is why they are determined to hike up to the top of Pikes Peak as a team, Team Justin. The hikers not only want to make Justin proud, they want to spread awareness and facilitate lifelong growth of Coloradans affected by an injury to the brain.
