In July 2008, my brother fell from a 4 story window and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Throughout his 16 months in the hospital, John defied all odds in his recovery relearning fundamental skills such as walking, talking and eating again. The road to recovery didn’t stop the moment John left rehab to go home. It’s an ongoing journey, with daily challenges and hurdles. Over the past 12 years, the most important part of John’s recovery, beyond his own will and determination, has been his village. My parents, sister, extended family and the community we found in the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado have all provided unwavering and unconditional support for John.
We are forever grateful for the BIAC and the love and support they have given us over the years. They have welcomed my family into their own and created lifelong memories for John who attends their summer programs.
Funding is critical for BIAC to continue supporting survivors, which is why I am reaching out to family and friends to share my commitment to participate in the 2020 Pikes Peak Challenge Barr Camp Hike. The Pikes Peak Challenge is the ultimate test of our own mental and physical boundaries as we raise money and awareness for those who have suffered an injury to the brain. Their daily challenges surmount our own.
Last year $185,000 was raised to support the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado. This year we hope to surpass that number. I hope you will consider helping us reach our goal.
