Stevie G’s Pikes Peak Challenge 2014On September 6, 2014, I’m participating in the Pikes Peak Challenge Summit Hike to support the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado (BIAC). When I finish, I will have hiked 13 miles and 7,400 vertical feet to the 14,110 foot summit of Pikes Peak to join other hikers and supporters in celebration of brain injury awareness.
Although this is quite an undertaking considering the altitude, possible weather conditions and other athletic requirements I might encounter, it pales in comparison to what survivors of a Brain Injury face every day. Did you know that there are over 200,000 individuals living with the effects of a brain injury in Colorado and that 5,000 new cases are reported every year?
But wait! There’s more!
This challenge was inspired by my brother Andres, who in 1996 had his life completely change when after a vehicle rollover accident, he completely lost the use of his legs and arms due to a severed spinal cord. Miraculous does not begin to explain my brother’s survival. However, determined, courageous, and down right crazy are words which accurately describe his mental state such that he would want to attempt the Pikes Peak Challenge…in a wheelchair.
So, being the strong and able bodied sibling, who am I to decline the opportunity to climb 13 miles alongside my brother. To hear more of this fascinating story, watch the accompanying video and then, if you are inspired, please make a donation and help me exceed my fundraising objective.
