I am hiking the Pikes Peak Challenge to honor my wife Julie; a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivor who this fall is celebrating a milestone year in her recovery. The end of September marks five years since becoming a TBI survivor. We choose to hike the Pikes Peak Challenge because WE CAN. Hiking and the outdoors had been a passion for both of us since moving to Colorado. Initially following Julie’s injuries, there were doubts of survival let alone thinking we would ever be able to return to any semblance of the level of activity we enjoyed together before. Through hard work, determination, and the help of too many people to name, Julie has made (and continues to make) a miraculous recovery and we are now able to again enjoy many of the recreational activities Colorado has to offer. Recovery from a TBI will likely never be complete, but Julie chooses to live her life like a VICTOR instead of a victim and although I would never wish this journey on anyone, it has been remarkable being in the front seat watching her recovery. She has handled her recovery to date with as much courage, compassion, humility, and at times humor as anyone possibly could.
