I want you to take a brief moment to introduce you to Nate. Several years before we met, Nate sustained some traumatic brain injuries from several accidents including two bad falls and being struck by lightening on top of Mt Princeton. These injuries changed his life and the lives of his friends and family forever. Before the accidents, Nate was a very active, a jokester, and a very successful and charming man; running everywhere and doing everything. After the accident, it was hard (even painful) for him to engage with people and it was uncertain if he would ever be able to work again. In all the time I knew Nate he struggled with headaches, migraines, parts of his body increasingly failing him (from the lightening strike), surgeries, therapies, etc. A year ago this August he decided to end his suffering.
Nate was just one of the over 500,000 Coloradans who live with the effects of an injury to the brain. Life can seem hard and insurmountable without support and guidance. The Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado is the go-to resource for help and services for survivors of an injury to the brain, their families, and providers.
I’m excited to share my commitment to participate in the 2017 Pikes Peak Challenge Barr Camp Hike. When I finish, I will have hiked 13 miles and 10,200 vertical feet to beautiful Barr Camp and back down.
Even more impressive than this challenge, is the courage and strength it takes for a someone to overcome day to day struggles that come with a life of living with an injury to the brain.
