Although my injury was 40 years ago I continue to struggle with invisible limitations. For a long time I dwelt on my struggles trying to make people aware of how difficult life can be with a brain injury, no matter how mild or severe. I keep pressing on. I am still learning how to cope, as adapting to a brain injury is a life long challenging event. I am thankful to the Brain Injury Association of Colorado for its ongoing efforts to increase awareness and provide functional assistance to individuals affected by brain injury. Being asked to be a part of Remembering Zach’s team is an honor. I knew him just a short time but his quiet, gentle ways spoke volumes on perseverance, courage & being grateful. While I won’t be hiking up Pikes Peak I will braving a walk across the Mackinac Bridge, in Michigan. I will have to overcome a long held fear of that bridge & malingering pain yet I will choose to focus on enjoying the journey, like Zach. Living with a brain injury has been a mixed blessing of sorts as well. While losing my career as an Occupational Therapist because of the residual effects of a brain injury. I have still been able to cherish my roles as a mother, sister, friend and volunteer. While my efforts to engage in most every tasks are conscious and fatiguing I am very grateful to still be here!
